講義概要/Course description
|
This course introduces students to intercultural studies, considering how cultures interact with one another. The course employs a historical perspective to consider in what ways cultures have influenced each other, as well as the roots of cultural conflict past and present. Students will become familiar with the various components of intercultural exchange – language, technology, religion, art, and so forth – as well as the theories and methods to make sense of them. Case studies from around the world will be used to explain the vital role of intercultural interaction in human societies, and help us to make sense of the interconnected world of today. Students will be able to engage with a variety of different contexts and develop the critical tools necessary to form their own perspectives.

The course seeks to familiarize students with the basic elements of intercultural studies, providing them with a foundation to critically examine the various ways in which diverse cultures interact.

補足事項/Supplementary notesAll classes are conducted in English. In principle, class content consists of lectures conducted in person. Readings, assignments, and other materials will be posted on Course Power and/or distributed via email. It is important for students to do all assigned readings. Students may bring up questions or offer comments during lecture sessions, or contact the instructor directly by email. Students are expected to behave in a mature and professional manner, and to show respect to one another and the instructor. This factors into the “Class Participation & Professionalism” grade.

Attendance and active engagement in classes are essential. Students must attend at least 75% of all classes (with the exception of the first week) to be eligible for course credit. Students up to15 minutes late for classes will be marked as late, while students more than 15minutes late will be marked as absent. Students late on two occasions will be marked as absent for one class. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to ask for any missed material and catch up any work. For technical support regarding online content, please consult the Institute of Information and Media (情報メディアセンター). Students must ensure their work is complete. Late assignments will be subjected to a penalty proportionate to how late they are submitted. When submitting an assignment by email, students will receive a confirmation message from the instructor: if no message is received, the assignment does not count as submitted (in such an event, students are responsible for checking with the instructor to ensure the assignment was received). There is zero tolerance for plagiarism, including copying material without citation, fabricating sources, and using generative AI such as ChatGPT, etc. If a student claims someone else’s work as their own, copies something partially or fully from anywhere else, including AI writing, or commits any other such academic integrity violation, this may result in them receiving zero on the assignment, failing the course, and/or facing other university disciplinary measures. Ignorance is not an excuse for plagiarism or other academic integrity violations. Class topics are subject to change. Students should consult the instructor if they have any questions or concerns.
