講義概要/Course description
This lecture class is on the topic of first and second languageacquisition, and the relationship between them. We are concerned basically withtheories of first and second language acquisition and development, and we interpretdata showing language development in the light of these theories. Variouscognitive psychological terms and concepts will be introduced, such as implicitversus explicit learning and memory, priming, restructuring, triggering, fossilization, interlanguage, and many others relevant to first (L1) and second(L2) acquisition theory. The course does not specifically deal with issuesinvolved in applying language acquisition theories to language instruction, butsome issues will be addressed in passing, such as the role of grammarinstruction in language classrooms, and the benefits of opportunities forinteraction in the L2, in and outside classrooms, for L2 development.
This class will be in lecture format. The content of twobooks will be described, and many supplementary handouts will be given toenable students to identify the main points of readings, and to take-notes in asystematic way. The course will focus on first language acquisition in thefirst semester and second language acquisition in the second semester.
