IE CORE SECTION: LEVELS I, II, III The IE Core Section meets weekly for 180 minutes. It is an integrated English class because all four English skills are taught in the same class. All instruction will be in English. Students in this class learn small group discussion skills, and listen to dialogues and short lectures as well as video. Learning tasks include participating in and leading small group discussions, keeping a journal, and reading and analyzing two novels. The link between the pair work and small group activities in class are themes such as Urban Life, Travel, Childhood, Biography, and Cross-Cultural Values. IE ACTIVE LISTENING SECTION: LEVELS I, II, III Using themes from the Core Section, this class concentrates on developing listening skills through listening to materials on DVD and online. Tasks include student reviews of listening materials, and films; individual presentation of music videos, commercials, and movie trailers as well as group presentations to the class based on streaming video. There is an online component, reallyenglish in which students complete work on listening, grammar, and reading through a TOEFL type question format. Other course materials include documentaries, films, TV shows. Each class is 90 minutes in length and meets weekly. IE WRITING SECTION: LEVELS I, II, III Level I emphasizes paragraph writing (topic sentences), including description, classification, and comparison-contrast. Essays (thesis statements) are introduced in Level II and further developed in Level III (quotations, MLA Style references). The writing topics are from IE Core Section themes. IE SEMINAR After completing the IE I, II, and III Courses, students can take an IE Seminar: Seminar A, a double-period class, 180 minutes, or a Seminar B of 90 minutes, worth half the credit of Seminar A. IE I and II students will use Richards, Jack., Jonathan Hull, and Susan Proctor. New Interchange 2, 4th ed., Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2012. All students of IE I, II, and III will also need Interactions 2, 6th ed., New York: McGraw Hill, 2012. There is a student booklet for the IE Core and IE Writing sections as well. However, some teachers may assign only part of it which may be downloaded at… http://tinyurl.com/h9jcj. Students should check with their teachers.
